Sit-in protests staged against lifting alcohol ban

Sit-in-protests were staged in many parts of the State today as a part of the relentless democratic agitation launched by Coalition Against Drugs and Alcohol (CADA) and other organisations demanding the reversal of the partial lifting of alcohol ban by the State Government.
At Hiyangthang Keithel, Hiyangthang Mamang Leikai Meira Paibi and CADA Hiyangthang Unit jointly organised a sit-in-protest demanding the State administration to revoke legalisation of brewing, sale and consumption of alcohol.
Speaking by the sideline of the protest, Yumnam Khomdonbi, president, Hiyangthang Mamang Leikai Meira Paibee lamented the Government decision.
She also expressed apprehension about the future of the State in the context of alcohol legalisation.

The participating protestors shouted many slogans opposing the partial lifting of alcohol prohibition.
Separately, Irilbung Kalika Lairembi Women Welfare Association and CADA Unit also organised a sit-in-protest at Irilbung Kalika in Imphal East district today.
Urging the State Government to reverse the decision to legalize alcohol, president, Irilbung Kalika Lairembi Women Welfare Association opined that the Government did not properly enforce the alcohol prohibition in the past which led to widespread alcohol abuse among the youths.
But now with alcohol legalization, the damage on the public is going to be more severe, she added.
Lastly, Moirang Khunou Bazar Apunba Meira Paibi Lup and CADA Unit jointly staged a sit-in-protest at Moirang Khunou Bazar in Bishnupur district today.
The protestors shouted various slogans against the Government's decision to legalise alcohol.
Moirang Khunou Bazar Apunba Meira Paibee Lup Member Aribam Roma Devi also raised a question to the State administration and asked if the Government will be able to deal with the increased cases of social and domestic issues that is bound to arise from the partial lifting of alcohol ban.
