Department exists to support farmers: Agri commissioner

Agriculture commissioner M Joy said that agriculture department exists to support farmers and there is no meaning of being a staff of the department unless they want to help farmers.
He was speaking as chief guest of an interaction programme of farmers and agricultural scientists organised jointly by State Agriculture Management and Extension Training Institute and Alumni Association of Agriculture College, Imphal at the farmers' training hall of the directorate of agriculture, Sanjenthong, here, on Wednesday.
Additional director of the department Todinang Panmei also attended the programme as guest of honour.
Speaking on the occasion, M Joy stressed on the need for department employees as well as students pursuing courses in agriculture to have the zeal to extend support to farmers and work with sincerity and dedication.
There is no meaning of being a staff of the department or studying agriculture if they do not want to help farmers, he said, while urging them to keep this in mind while carrying out their services.
While stating that the Central government is taking up various initiatives to enhance farmers' income with the state government too making all out efforts in this regard, the director pointed out that in order to achieve the goal, it is important to provide the farmers with good quality seeds and other agricultural inputs; Moreover, building a healthy relationship between the farmers and the department is crucial, he said while calling upon the department staff to make their best contribution in order to make the state self sufficient in terms of food production.
As a part of the programme, Central Agricultural University's professor L Nabachandra, professor Kh Ibohal and ICAR joint director Dr I Meghachandra talked on scientific techniques of farming for boosting productivity and importance of good quality seeds.
They also answered questions raised by farmers.
