Imphal, January 07 2024:
A seven-day state level basic training programme on beekeeping organised by Manipur Beekeeping and Honey Mission (MBHM), Department of Horticulture and Soil Conservation, was inaugurated at the conference hall of the department in Sanjenthong on Saturday morning.
The training programme is being sponsored by National Bee Board, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Department of Agriculture.
The inaugural function was attended by MBHM and Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH) mission director Md Zakir Hussain Khan, Department of Horticulture and Soil Conservation deputy director Lenin Khwairakpam, MHID officer in-charge Y Bikram and trainee farmers from various districts of the state.
Speaking on the occasion, Md Zakir Hussain Khan informed that this is the eight beekeeping programme to be held, as part of the 10 training programmes specified by the Ministry concerned.
He continued that beekeeping is not only important to agriculture but also provides employment opportunities to youth, being an important source of income generation.
Farmers don't need large space to install a beekeeping box to rear bees as a single beekeeping box can yield 30-40kg of honey a year, in addition to increasing the crop yield of farmers by 15-20 per cent.
Apart from honey, beekeeping can also provide the high-in-demand bee venom, royal jelly and other products, he informed and urged the trainee farmers to learn and apply the knowledge imparted by experts during the programme.
