Imphal, September 09 2026: Manipur Police have suspended a serving Kuki police personnel, identified as Thangginlian Vaiphei, for his alleged involvement in the killing of six Naga civilians whose mutilated bodies were recovered on June 10, and ordered a departmental enquiry against him.

An order to this effect was issued by Bishnupur SP Ksh Ravikumar Singh.

Even as the order did not specify the case for which Thangginlian was suspended, a PIL filed by Advocate Mark Khapai before the High Court of Manipur had alleged that a woman among those abducted had identified him as one of those who detained them.

Originally a personnel of Bishnupur Police, he is presently attached to Kangpokpi Police, according to the order.

His suspension came days after Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam denied the involvement of any police personnel in the abduction and murder of the six Naga civilians during the Assembly session on September 3 .

He had stated that a police personnel was arrested and questioned in connection with the case but was released after it was found that he was on duty on the day of the abduction.

The Home Minister, however, said that four persons have been arrested so far for their alleged involvement in the crime.

Notably, a hostage crisis involving Kukis and Nagas emerged following an ambush in Kangpokpi in which three Thadou Church leaders were killed on May 13 .

On the same day, Kuki and Naga groups captured 48 people.

On May 15, 14 captives each from the two communities were released.

The remaining 14 Kuki hostages were freed unharmed on June 9.Mutilated bodies of the six Nagas were found the next day.

While Naga groups released all the Kuki hostages on June 9, the mutilated remains of six Naga civilians were recovered on June 10 at Kharam Vaiphei in Kangpokpi.

Several groups have alleged that they were killed by the KNF (P), led by Thangboi Kipgen, the husband of Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen.

Their mortal remains are still lying at the JNIMS mortuary, as Naga groups, backed by the people of Manipur and the victim families continue to demand justice and the abrogation of the Suspension of Operation (SoO) pact with Kuki militants.

Moreover, nine Naga legislators had abstained from Manipur Assembly proceedings on September 7 in protest against the killing of the six Nagas and to press for action against Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen, calling her husband the prime accused.

Naga People's Front chief Awangbou Newmai announced the abstention hours before the proceedings while accusing Thangboi Kipgen of being responsible for the killing.

The Naga legislators, had also on August 31, submitted a memorandum to Union Home Minister Amit Shah demanding justice for the six Naga men and the removal of Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen.
