JFD demands NRC assurance

Imphal, September 08 2026: The Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) has urged the Government to give a concrete assurance within the current month of September to update the National Register of Citizens (NRC) with 1951 as the base year.

New Checkon Senior Citizens Society, New Checkon Meira Paibi and New Checkon Leikai Singlup held a sit-in-protest at New Checkon community hall pressing the demand for updating the NRC with 1951 as the base year before any census exercise is carried out in Manipur.

Speaking to media persons at the protest, JFD convenor Jeetendra Ningomba asserted that no census should be conducted in Manipur until the process of updating the NRC is completed comprehensively.

Political leaders of the State should be more keen and actively supporting the public demand to update the NRC with 1951 as the base year in the interest of future generations but they seem to be shirking their responsibilities, he remarked.

Asserting that many of the issues and challenges Manipur is facing at present were bred by the influx of illegal immigrants, Jeetendra underscored the urgent need to distinguish all illegal immigrants from genuine citizens.

He urged the State Government to go to New Delhi by September 10, 2026 in order to exert pressure on the Government of India to update the NRC with 1951 as the base year.

He categorically stated that no census-related work should be taken up in Manipur until the process of updating the NRC is completed.

He appealed to all Government employees detailed for census duties not to go for house listing or population enumeration works.

The JFD convenor said that the Government should bear sole responsibility for any consequences if it initiates census operations in defiance of the people's collective demand and wish.

Senior citizen Longjam Nilamani said that indigenous people are facing complete domination by illegal immigrants.

The continuous influx of illegal immigrants is now posing serious threats to all indigenous people in all spheres.

In order to address these threats effectively, all illegal immigrants must be identified and deported, Nilamani said.
