Ukhrul/Kangpokpi, October 17 2026: At least one Kuki man was killed and five others were injured in a clash between armed Kukis and Naga village guards at Chassad, Kamjong district today.

Sources said that unprovoked firing by Kuki militants upon Tangkhul civilians at around 2.30 pm triggered an exchange of firing between the two sides.

According to the sources, one Kuki man was killed while five others sustained injuries in the retaliatory firing.

The deceased has been identified as Seikhohao Haokip (35) s/o Thangchon Haokip of Chassad village.

He was said to be a popular YouTuber in the locality.

The injured Kukis have been identified as Thangjahao Haokip, chief of Chassad, ST Khailun Haokip, Seikhohou, Thang-gin Touthang and Seipao Haokip, chief of Phungtha (Kachouphung Kuki) .

All the five injured men were taken to a nearby army camp in Chassad for medical treatment.

After a short interval of around 20 minutes, a fierce gun battle started again and it was going on till the time of filing this report.

According to some local residents (Kukis), the power lines supplying electricity to Chassad village had allegedly been deliberately damaged by neighbouring Tangkhuls, leaving the village without electricity.

Some of the villagers went to repair the power lines today but they were ambushed leading to the casualty and injuries.

Meanwhile CoTU has expressed deep anguish and condemned what it described as a cowardly attack by armed Naga militants on innocent civilians, including two village chiefs.

The committee has urged the incumbent legislators from Ukhrul, Kamjong, Noney and Tamei to rein in armed groups operating in their respective areas.

CoTU has also appealed to the State Government to urgently deploy Central security forces to safeguard minority villages, particularly Chassad in Kamjong district.
