Imphal, January 07 2024:
The Communist Party of India has urged the State Government to convene an Assembly Session to discuss the current Manipur crisis and pave way for peace.
Pallab Sengupta, CPI's National Council secretary said holding the Assembly Session will open dialogue, allowing both communities to engage in discussions to find a solution to the crisis.
Addressing media persons in a press meet at Nirmala Hotel, Thangal Bazar, Imphal, Pallab Sengupta said CPI is planning to hold a 3-day mass hunger strike demanding the Government to convene an immediate Assembly Session to restore peace and order in Manipur.
The Assembly Session must be convened before Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Nyay Yatra, he said.
The CPI leader said the priority of the Central Government as well as the State Government should be to restore normalcy and peace in Manipur.
He accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of ignoring the Manipur conflict.
"Eight months have passed and how many more deaths should there be until the Prime Minister finally makes his visit to Manipur.
It is shameful that the Prime Minister who speaks about every issue under the sun is silent when it comes to Manipur," Pallab Sengupta said.
Apparently taking a dig at BJP, he said preference shouldn't be given to elections over the Manipur crisis.
"Elections can wait, but the bloodshed in Manipur must be stopped.
A peaceful atmosphere is prerequisite to a proper election," he said.
Pallab Sengupta criticised the Government for "ineffective" use of the potential of its armed forces.
The priority should be to restore normalcy and peace in Manipur.
This can be attained when the Central and State armed forces work together in sync, he said.
The CPI leader also expressed concern over the recent arrests of two journalists.
"The Editors are victims who wanted to show the truth to the people.
The arrests were unnecessary," he said.
The two journalists should be released immediately, and cases against them should be dropped, he added.
He further informed that the party along with some historians are preparing a comprehensive document on the present crisis.
The CPI leader emphasised and reiterated that the Assembly Session is vital to initiate dialogue between the two communities in conflict.
