Transporters air woes to Governor

Imphal, February 13 2024: A six members delegation of Akhil Bhartiya Transport Association called on Governor Anusuiya Uikey at Raj Bhavan on Tuesday and submitted a memorandum highlighting the day-to-day challenges and problems faced by the transporters of all goods, including essential commodities due to the hostile condition in Manipur sector of the highways and price rise of commodities.

According to a release issued by Raj Bhavan secretariat, the delegation informed the Governor that in-spite of the ongoing ethnic violence in the state, transporters continue to serve as warriors and ambassadors of the great nation to reach out to the remotest corner, ensuring availability of essential commodities.

They, nevertheless, confided to the Governor about the insecure environment prevalent along the National Highways - 2 and 37 as extortion in the form of illegal taxes is being collected by armed groups and miscreants at various checkpoints.

As such, the delegation urged the Governor to look into seriousness of the problem and the impending grim situation faced by the truck drivers, the transporters, as well as general population of Manipur.

While giving a patient hearing to their concerns and grievances, Governor Uikey said she had already raised the issue during the recent meeting in Shillong with the Union Home Minister and sought intervention to stop all such illegal activities along the highways.

She further conveyed that issues related to extortion, looting, illegal tax collection especially along the national highways were discussed with security advisor, chief secretary and the chief minister.

Measures to control all forms of disturbances were also informed by the government, she said and assured the delegation that she will raise the matter with the Central leaders while advising the team to meet the security advisor on the matter.
