Kangpokpi, October 20 2026:
Saitu AC MLA Haokholet Kipgen strongly condemned the killing of three civilians and injuries to three others in the firing incident at Nongshum-Sunurok on October 19, urging all communities to exercise restraint and ensure that the tragedy does not trigger another cycle of violence in the conflict-scarred state.
Kipgen said the incident was particularly distressing as Manipur was gradually limping back towards normalcy after more than three years of conflict, with communities cautiously attempting to overcome deep-seated mistrust, divisions and hostility.
Expressing shock and anguish over die loss of lives, he conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.
Acknowledging the consequences of misunderstandings, apprehensions and unintended confrontations in a society fractured by prolonged conflict, the MLA said such possibilities did not diminish the gravity of the loss of innocent lives but reinforced the urgent need for a fair investigation and accountability.
Reiterating his commitment to peace, the Saitu legislator said his decision to physically attend the Manipur Legislative Assembly session in Imphal, despite considerable reservations and apprehensions, was guided by the larger interest of peace and the urgent need to bridge the widening gulf of mistrust between communities.
Appealing to citizens across community lines to reject inflammatory rhetoric and divisive attempts, Kipgen urged all stakeholders to uphold the rule of law, resist provocation and demonstrate the moral courage necessary to prevent further escalation.
"Let humanity prevail over hostility, dialogue over division, and peace over violence," Kipgen added.
