Womenfolk allege unruly remark by SI, tear-gassed

Reacting against alleged unruly remark by commando sub-inspector Dhanabir, agitated meira paibi stormed Khongjom police station demanding to produce Dhanabir and tender apology to the public, as security forces resorted to firing tear gas shells to control the mob.
The incident occurred when the meira paibi activists of Tekcham and surrounding areas prevented a combined team of Manipur police and CRPF from conducting combing operation in Tekcham area under Thoubal district around 4 am on Tuesday.
Even as the combined team was on their way to conduct operation, large numbers of meira paibi from Tentha, Sapam, Samaram and Wangjing tried to storm Khongjom police station.
On receipt of reports about the womenfolk trying to storm the police station, Thoubal additional SP Wangkhomba Okramcha and SDPO W Ibocha arrived at the spot to pacify the meira paibis with some called inside the police station for a meeting and informed that the search operation was planned based on information about some miscreants trying to extort money from the public.
An understanding was arrived at after the meira paibi women were assured that local representatives would be informed before conduct of search operations in future.
As the womenfolk were about to disperse, commando OC in-charge Dhanabir came out of Khongjom police station and passed unruly remarks against the meira paibis, including threaten to shoot and kill husbands, sons and grandsons of the agitating women.
Infuriated with the police officer's unruly conduct', the meira paibis launched impromptu protest demanding apology from Dhanabir and also his removal from the police station.
As there was apprehension that the protest might go out of hand, the police resorted to firing of tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.
