Illegal highway tax collection: Association seeks Governor's intervention

A six member delegation of Akhil Bhartiya Transport Association called on Governor Anusuiya Uikey at Raj Bhavan today and submitted a memorandum highlighting the day-to-day challenges and problems faced by the transporters of all goods, including essential commodities due to the critical situation prevailing around the highways of Manipur and price rise of commodities.
According to a press release issued by PRO Raj Bhavan, the Akhil Bharatiya Transport Association team spoke about the role taken by the transporters during this ongoing ethnic clash in Manipur where they have braved various difficulties to reach out to the remotest corner to avail all essential commodities.

They informed the Governor about the insecure environment along National Highways � 2 and 37 wherein extortion in the form of illegal taxes is reportedly being collected by self styled groups/miscreants at various checkpoints.
Thus, they requested the Governor to look into the problem and the impending grim situation faced by the truck drivers, the transporters, as well as the general public of Manipur.
While giving a patient hearing to their concerns and grievances, the Governor said that she had raised this issue during the recent meeting in Shillong with the Union Home Minister and sought intervention to stop all such illegal activities along the highways.
She said issues of extortion, looting, illegal tax collection especially along the national highways have also been discussed with the Security Advisor, Chief Secretary and the Chief Minister.
Measures to control all forms of disturbance were also informed by the Government, she said.
The Governor assured the delegation that she will raise the matter with the Central leaders and asked them to meet with the Security Advisor.
