Ngangom Nevy laid to rest at Machin Manao Ching
Source: Chronicle News Service

Imphal, February 13 2024: The mortal remains of Ngangom Nevy Meitei of Sugnu Awang Mandop Leikai, who remained traceless since May 28 amid the ethnic strife that broke out on May 3 last, were finally laid to rest at Machin Manao Ching in Kakching district after his skeletal remains were claimed from JNIMS morgue on Wednesday.

Kakching District Athoubasinggi Ningsing Khubam Managing Committee and the JAC so formed performed the burial ceremony of then 19-year old Nevy.

He had remained missing since the intervening night of May 27 and 28, 2023 .

After a video went viral on social media on January 30, Sugnu police along with family of Nevy searched suspected places and even dug up the ground at 'Nazareth' village under Sugnu police station the next day finally leading to discovery of his skeletal remains.

After forensic experts conducted an inquest, Sugnu police retrieved the body parts and deposited the same at JNIMS morgue for relevant procedure.

On completion of all legal formalities, his family, JAC and the Kakching Committed along with the people brought the skeletal remains of Nevy from JNIMS morgue and performed his burial service at Machin Manao Ching.

Speaking in this regard, JAC convenor Chanthoi Aheibam recalled that the last rites of Nevy were performed earlier by replacing his body with 'Pangong' stem as his body could not be found.

However, after a video went viral on social media, state forces searched for the body and found the skeletal remains.

As chief minister assured of fulfilling the demands of deceased family and the JAC; the body of Nevy was claimed from the morgue for the last rites.

However, if the government fails to translate into action assurance given, then the JAC along with people will launch intense protest, the convenor cautioned.

Kakching Committee president Naorem Sanjitku-mar stated that a committee has been formed to protect Machin Manao Ching.

A memorial site for the martyrs will be established at the place, he continued, while urging the government to extend help in setting up of the memorial site.

He also exhorted the government to work out a solution and end the conflict at the earliest.
