MSCW to assist in deportation of convicted Myanmarese women

Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW) chairperson Salam Ulka has informed that the Commission will assist in the deportation of Myanmarese women, whose conviction time at Manipur Central Jail, Old Lambulane has ended.
In this regard, a written request would soon be forwarded to the Ministry of Home Affairs, she added.
On Friday, a team of MSCW consisting of chairperson Salam Ulka, members Thum-lip Tiningpham Monsang, Lourembam Dayabati and other staff visited Manipur Central Jail, Old Lambulane and interacted with the inmates.
Mentioning the role played by MSCW in protection of women's rights, chairperson Ulka said that the Commission visited the jail to assess the condition of the inmates, their security, medical and health care facilities, food and initiatives taken up to provide source of life in and out from prison.
The Commission takes the problems and rehabilitation of inmates after getting released from jail, seriously, she asserted.
Informing that MSCW in collaboration with the jail authority would be organising legal awareness and vocational programmes, the chairperson assured of taking up steps to allow the inmates to reconnect with their families who cannot come to visit them.
Meanwhile, the jail authority had written to the Ministry of Home Affairs for deportation of Myanmar nationals whose conviction period has expired.
In this regard, MSCW will also write to the Ministry to assist in the deportation of the Myanmar nationals, especially the women, she stated.
At present, there are a total of 96 inmates in the jail, of which four are ordinary Under Trial Prisoner (UTP), 12 UTP (Foreigner), 40 UTP (ND&PS) Act, one PIT-(ND&PS Act) detenu, three convicts and 36 foreigner convicts.
In addition, there are 12 young boys and 13 young girls, she added.
During the inspection, SP Manipur Central Jail Bhadrika provided detailed information on the female inmates to the MSCW team, while informing about lack of infrastructure and also initiative of teaching vocational tasks to the inmates for the future, as most of the inmates are undertrial prisoners.
