Imphal, August 18 2023:
A scuffle broke out today between security personnel and members of a student body demanding deferment of Manipur University's MA entrance exams in front of MU Main Gate leading to injuries on both sides.
This morning, the Manipur University authority set up preparations to conduct the MA entrance exams for several departments in MU from 8.30 am to 10.30 am.
However, members of a student body entered the MU campus around the same time and urged the MU authority to postpone the entrance exams by a few days as some students are still stuck in relief camps while others did not have access to the internet to submit the necessary form for the examinations.

To this appeal, the MU authority responded saying that it would be inconvenient to postpone the entrance exams at this juncture.
Infuriated by this response, a confrontation occurred between the students and MU authority.
Members of the student body proceeded to lock up some classrooms as well as the Main Gate of MU and began protesting in front of the gate.
Students who arrived at the university to appear for the entrance exams were fortunately already inside the campus before the main gate was locked.
However, the exam was delayed due to the incident and began at 9.10 am instead.
Meanwhile, students who came to appear for the second shift of the entrance exam were left stranded outside the gate.
Following this, an Imphal West Commando team led by Imphal West Additional SP M Amit and a team of Singjamei police personnel arrived at around 9.45 am and spoke with the protestors.
Owing to disagreements between the two parties, a scuffle broke out which left one student body member and the Additional SP injured.
The Commando and police team finally managed to bring the situation under control and arrested some protesting students.
The entrance test was also conducted smoothly thereafter under heavy security.
At the time of filing this report, out of all the students arrested, two were still in police custody.
