MoU inked, transporters' strike likely to be lifted

Imphal, August 01 2026: The cease work strike launched by POL transporters since August 31 is likely to be lifted soon as the transporters have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the State Government this afternoon.

A meeting was held at the Cabinet Hall of the Chief Minister's Secretariat, Babupara between representatives of several POL transporters and drivers' associations and the State Government.

The meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand deliberated on issues related to convoy movement on NH-37 (Imphal-Jiribam highway) .

Taking to the social media after the meeting, the Chief Minister stated that the safety of people and the smooth movement of goods and passengers are the highest priority of his Government.

"Today, I met with representatives of the Transport Union, in the presence of senior officials of the State Government, to discuss the prevailing conditions on our highways.

We deliberated on strengthening highway security and ensuring safe, reliable and uninterrupted transportation", Khemchand wrote in a social media post.

"Our Government remains steadfast in its commitment to keeping our highways secure and protecting the interests and livelihoods of our people", Khemchand added.

At the end of the meeting, the State Government signed an MoU with the Core Committee of the Consortium of Manipur Petroleum Products Transporters' Fraternity, Retail Outlet Dealers, LPG Distributors and Drivers' Associations.

According to the MoU, a coordination committee will be formed with the Commissioner (Home) as the chairman.

The committee will have representatives of the Police Department, CRPF, CAF&PD Department and the Core Committee of the Consortium of Manipur Petroleum Products Trans- porters' Fraternity, Retail Outlet Dealers, LPG Distributors and Drivers' Associations.

The committee will review and revise the existing SoP regarding convoy movement along NH-37 and submit its report to the Government within a month and the revised SoP will be published in the State gazette.

Home Department/Police Headquarters will issue directives to all the district SPs/CRPF to strictly follow the existing SoP.

The MoU says that Home Department/Police Headquarters will appoint a Nodal Officer to oversee convoy movement along NH-37 and the Nodal Officer will in turn appoint Sub-Nodal Officers in all districts.

The Nodal Officer will review convoy movement along NH-37 every month or as per the need of the situation.

According to the MoU, district SPs will be directed to undertake special drives to stop extortions by miscreants on the field along NH-37 .

Subsequent upon the signing of the MoU, Special Secretary (Home) A Subhash Singh has written to the DGP to issue directions to all the district SPs/CRPF to strictly follow the existing SoP regarding convoy movement along NH-37 .

The DGP has been asked to appoint a Nodal Officer to oversee convoy movement along NH-37 and let the Nodal Officer appoint Sub-Nodal Officers in all the districts.

The DGP has also been asked to direct the Nodal Officer to review the convoy movement along NH-37 every month or as per the need of the situation.

The Special Secretary (Home) has further asked the DGP to direct the district SPs to undertake special drives to stop extortions by miscreants along NH-37 .
