Will not tolerate ceding territory to Myanmar: AMSU

Imphal, August 06 2026: The All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) has categorically stated that it will not tolerate any attempt of the Government of India to cede any part of Manipur to Myanmar.

Speaking to media persons today, AMSU general secretary Samandram Lanba Luwang said that The Diplomat published a report on July 17, 2026 about the Government of India's purported plan to cede a part of Manipuri's territory to Myanmar.

AMSU will not accept any such plan to cede or swap land with Myanmar, he said.

The Government of India and the State Government must clarify the veracity of the report that plans are afoot to swap 1.4 square miles (3.6 Sq Kms) of Manipur's located between border pillar numbers 65 and 68 with neighbouring Myanmar, he said.

The AMSU general secretary said that the Government of India must recognise the history of Manipur and keep its territorial boundary which was there at the merger intact.

If the Government of India is not in a position to safeguard the territorial boundary of Manipur, the possibility of people demanding pre-merger status cannot be ruled out, he said.

He said that a large number of Manipuri forefathers sacrificed their lives to protect the territorial boundary of the State.

Lanba warned that the people of Manipur will not remain silent to ceding any part of Manipur's territory to the neighbouring country, whether it is for suppression of insurgents or checking illegal immigration.

Political leaders of the State must wake up and do everything to prevent the attempt to cede parts of the State's territory to Myanmar, he said.

If the report that the Government of India is planning to cede parts of Manipur's territory to Myanmar, AMSU is fully prepared to launch strong mass movements, Lanba said.

He added that the people of Manipur have not forgotten how Kabaw Valley was gifted away to Myanmar.
