Manipur crisis, an impact of geopolitics: Bertil Lintner

Illustrious Swedish journalist Bertil Lintner said that the conflict in Manipur is an impact of geopolitics in the region.
Lintner delivered a lecture on the topic 'China's Shadow in Myanmar and Northeast India Conflict' at Manipur Press Club, here, on Wednesday.
The lecture programme, powered by The People's Chronicle and Poknapham, was organised by All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) as part of the series of activities in connection with the golden jubilee celebration of the union and Manipur Press Club.
During an interaction with the media after the lecture programme, Lintner said that the present crisis in Manipur is an impact of geopolitics in the region.
It is obvious to feel some heat if the neighbouring country is burning, he said referred to the turmoil in Myanmar.
The conflict in Myanmar is persisting for a long period due to the influence of geopolitics and its impact is overflowing into the neighbouring states of India, especially in Manipur in the form of drugs and illegal immigrants.
He, however, declined to comment on the current crisis besieging the state.
Earlier, while speaking as guest of honour of the inaugural function of the programme, Lintner elaborated on the impact of geopolitics played by China, different movements in the South West Asia Region and the conflict in Myanmar and North East India.
He also spoke at length on the changes Myanmar had witnessed since the 1980s.Lintner shared his observation on the military coup that took place in February 2021 and the follow up situation in Myanmar, as well as on the interest and outlooks of China and India towards the trouble-torn country.
Manipur University vice-chancellor professor N Lokendra, who attended the event as chief guest, hailed the role played by the media in the society.
He delved in to the journey of Manipur and other north eastern states from the perspective of economy and politics as well as how colonial policies and imperialist agenda affect the state and its neighbours.
AMWJU president Bijoy Kakchingtabam presided over the event, which was attended by journalists, academicians, social activists, retired army officers, students and people from all walks of life in the society.
