Youth killed in firing

Imphal, February 14 2024: A 24 year old man got killed while two others sustained injuries in firing by security forces at Pangei while controlling a mob who stormed Manipur Police Training College (MPTC) last night.

It is reported that the security forces resorted to firingas the mob tried to storm the police training college.

The deceased has been identified as Okram Sanaton from Pangei Okram Leikai while the injured are Khomdram Roberston (27), s/o Samungou of Heingang Makha Leikai and Takhellambam Ren (20), s/o Rakesh of Tera Tongbram Leikai.

According to sources, a large number of people stormed MPTC after several Meitei villages viz Khamenlok, Pukhao.

Sabungkhok and Kadangband were attacked by heavily armed Kuki militants yesterday.

The mob first stormed the 5th IRB post at Chingarel Tejpur in Imphal East at around 8.45 pm, following which the security forces fired some rounds in the air to disperse them.

Some arms and ammunition have been allegedly reported missing from the IRB post.

After storming the IRB post, the mob took the Pangei road and stormed the MPTC.

Sources said the mob, however, met with firing by security forces at around 10.30 pm .

Three persons got injured in the firing and one of them died on the way to JNIMS Hospital.

Sounds of firing tear gas shells and mock bombs were heard at Chingarel Tejpur and Pangei areas till midnight.
