Imphal, January 15 2023:
Unknown persons fired two rounds at the residence of Ningombam Ojit, working president of Manipur People's Party (MPP) at Bashikhong yesterday night.
The incident took place at around 7.30 pm yesterday.
According to N Ojit's younger sister, N Indira, 4 to 5 unknown persons came and asked for her brother and when she told them he wasn't home, they asked for her sister-in-law.
When she insisted to tell her the reason for asking for her brother, one of them, without answering, took out a gun and fired two rounds.
Meanwhile, at the MPP's office at Mapal Kangjeibung today, N Ojit told media persons that the incident was "unexpected and unfortunate".
Ojit claimed that the unknown persons had threatened that he should resign from the post of the working president of the MPP.
"After serving around 25 years as an Advocate, I joined the MPP to solve issues plaguing Manipur for years.
There had been issues within the party, however from April 16 last year, the party is on a new direction," he said.
Ojit asserted that the incident happened yesterday when the party was in the midst of planning to conduct an election on January 28 to elect a regular president for a term of 3 years.
Ojit informed that he had taken nomination form for contesting the January 28 election yesterday.
While the persons involved in the incident have not been identified yet, Ojit said, he doubts that it was a work of armed revolutionaries.
Stating it may be the work of some hired muscles and persons with vested interests, Ojit appealed to the persons or group concerned to inform him about his apparent "mistakes" and give him the chance to "rectify" them.
There have been many members of the MPP who have lost their lives to gun violence.
Such incidents must be stopped, he said, asking for a chance to make the party stronger in the interest of the people.
On the other hand, locals and womenfolk staged a sit-in protest condemning the incident at Bashikhong today.
They demanded reason and urged those involved to claim responsibility for the incident.
