Imphal, May 06 2024:
Tension is on the rise in Sekmai area as the United Committee Manipur (UCM), Sekmai Unit raised alarm over the encroachment by the Kukis on farmland owned by Meetei farmers and demanded that the government stop the farming activities of Kuki people in the area.
Addressing the media at Manipur Press Club, here, on Monday, with representatives from Awang Sekmai Turel Wangma Farmers' Association; UCM Sekmai president Ayangbam Suresh said that approximately 200 hectares of farmland located on the opposite bank of Sekmai River, adjacent to Kuki villages Phaileng and Lu-wangsangol, belong to Meetei farmers who hold the legal title deeds.
However, since the outbreak of violence on May 3 last year, Meetei farmers have been unable to utilise their land due to persistent attacks from Kuki militants.
Despite demands for compensation from the government, Meetei farmers are yet to receive any assistance.
Adding to plight of the Meetei farms, some Kuki people, under the watch of Kuki militants, have begun farming on the farmland owned by Meetei farmers, he said and urged the government to take immediate action to halt Kuki encroachment and ensure Meetei farmers can tend their field without any fear.
UCM Sekmai vice-pres-ident Kh Ibobi highlighted that the farmlands in question fall within the jurisdiction of Imphal West district.
Despite the presence of Assam Rifles bunkers in adjacent hills, Meetei farm owners are unable to access their land due to persistent threats from Kuki militants.
He further expressed disappointment over lack of action from the side of Assam Rifles to prevent Kuki encroachment and demanded the government to remove Assam Rifles from the area.
