With more than 80 book stalls open, the 29th Imphal Book Fair 2023 kicked off at TRAU Ground, Kwakeithel today.
Art and Culture Commissioner M Joy Singh, Director L Kishoijit, MALA president K Chaoba Singh attended the inauguration ceremony of the fair as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
Notably, a total of 37 firms are opening 84 stalls at the fair which will go on for 10 days.
20 firms of Manipur are opening 39 book stalls, while the 17 firms from outside States are opening 45 stalls selling books at 15 percent discount.
Chief guest of the event, Art and Culture Commissioner M Joy Singh said, the fair is being organised jointly by the State Central Library, Department of Art and Culture and Raja Rammuhon Roy Library Foundation, Kolkata.
He said the fair is showcasing and selling a wide range of quality books on different genres.
A library plays a very important role in educating the people, especially students.
It is a bank of knowledge where students can learn about various subjects.
While it helps in their academic careers, it also broadens their horizons and helps them become good citizens.
While all schools, colleges and educational institutions should have good libraries, students should inculcate reading habits, he said.
M Joy said that libraries know no age, caste, gender and status.
Everybody can visit the public library and study.
And when they share what they learn from reading books with other people, it would prove very productive for the society.
Appealing to the people of age to visit the fair, he also informed that there is a plan to hold the book fair in a grander way the next year.
Art and Culture Director L Kishorjit Singh also appealed to the people to visit the fair and explore the books available.
He asked people to develop reading habits and enhance the library movement.
