Pythons rescued

One Burmese python which was worshipped as an incarnation of the Almighty for over 30 days at Mayang Imphal Konchak Mayai Leikai has been rescued by a team of People for Animals (PFA) Manipur, Central Forest Division and Mayang Imphal police.
A press release issued by PFA said that they went to rescue the reptile after receiving information that people from different parts of the State came to Mayang Imphal Konchak Mayai Leikai to take blessings from the python and to buy the leftover milk offered to it.
Saying that a temple-like structure was also found constructed to house the python, PFA added that the python was rescued with the assistance of police from the house of a deed writer Waikhom Amuba.
PFA said that keeping a python as a pet and treating it as an avatar of God is against Wildlife Protection Act and violating the rules can land a person in jail for three years or impose a fine of Rs 25,000 .
Meanwhile, a team led by Kakching RO, L Dinesh under the supervision of DFO Thoubal, Th Loken along with members of People For Animals (PFA) Manipur have successfully rescued a bloated Burmese Python from Tangjeng in Kakching district yesterday.
The python was found in Singtom of Churachandpur district by a group from Tangjeng while searching for mushrooms, said a release issued by L Biswajeet Meitei, PFA Manipur.
Fearing that the python would be captured by hunters as it was unable to move, Th Jiten along with few others brought the python to Tangjeng on October 11 .
Many people came from far & near to see the python and perform rituals/pray.
After receiving information of the incident, members of PFA Manipur and Forest staff rushed to Tangjeng to rescue the python.
The Burmese Python is currently kept at Iroisemba Zoological Garden.
