Imphal, December 01 2021:
The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) has given an 18 year old girl from Pamjal Village in Churachandpur district, who had been suffering from 'osteo-myelitis' for the last 14 years to walk again.
The girl had a history of injury on her left thigh due to a fall at home at a tender age of 4 in 2007 but due to financial constraints and lack of proper access to health facilities, her treatment was delayed which ultimately led to an infection on her left thigh bone (femur) which is medically known as chronic osteomyelitis.
This had resulted in the destruction of almost 13 cm of her femur, said a statement issued by RIMS today.
A combined team of Plastic Surgeons and Orthopaedics team of RIMS performed a nine-hour long surgery to reconstruct her left thigh bone.
The Plastic Surgery team was led by Dr AK Ibohal Singh, Associate Professor and HoD and Dr P Manisana, Senior Resident under the supervision of Prof N Sanjib Singh, Medical Superintendent RIMS while the Orthopaedics team was led by Dr Moirangthem Nando from District Hospital Churachandpur and assisted by Dr G Rishikanta Sharma.
Dr L Chaoba, Associate Professor of Anaesthesiology and Dr S Praneshwori (Senior Resident) administered spinal epidural anaesthesia to the patient.
The Plastic Surgery team took out a portion of the smaller right leg bone (one of the two bones of leg, fibula) along with the accompanying blood vessels (peroneal artery and veins) to reconstruct the left thigh bone.
The Orthopaedics Surgeon fixed the harvested fibula into the gap of the left thigh bone and later on the blood vessels of the fibula were joined with the blood vessels in the left thigh to give new life to the newly attached fibula.
RIMS Director Prof Ahanthem Santa Singh lauded the team and also ensured all possible help from the administration.
Similar free fibula flap reconstruction for long bone defects as well as lower jaw bone defects have been successfully accomplished by RIMS hospital since 2010, added the statement.
