Imphal, December 01 2021:
An 18-year old girl hailing from Pamjal village under Thanlon sub-division in Chu-rachandpur district, who was suffering from severe shortening of the left thigh bone due to chronic osteomyetitis, is able to walk on her feet again after going through a major reconstructive operation at RIMS Hospital, Imphal.
A release by RIMS media advisor N Phillip Singh said the girl was operated by a combined team of plastic surgeons and orthopaedics team, which lasted about 9 hours to reconstruct her left thigh bone.
The Plastic Surgery team led by HOD of plastic surgery department Dr AK Ibohal Singh and senior resident Dr P Manisana under the supervision of RIMS medical superintendent Prof N Sanjib Singh, who is also the former head of plastic surgery department RIMS, took out a portion of the smaller Right Leg bone (one of the two bones of leg, fibula) along with the accompanying blood vessels (peroneal Artery and Veins) to reconstruct the Left Thigh bone.
The Orthopaedics surgeons led by Churachandpur district hospital representative Dr Moirangthem Nando and assisted by post-graduate trainees of RIMS Dr G Rishikanta Sharma, fixed the harvested fibula into the gap of the Left Thigh bone.
Later on, the blood vessels of the fibula were joined to blood vessels in the Left Thigh (Saphenous Vein and femoral artery) to give new life to the fibula.
The patient was administered spinal epidural Anaesthesia by Anaesthesiology associate professor Dr L Chaoba and senior resident Dr Praneshwori, elaborated the release.
It also informed that the girlfrom Pamjal village had a history of injury over left thigh while falling down at home at a tender age of four years in 2007, but due to financial constraints and lack of proper access to health facilities, her treatment was delayed, which ultimately led to an infective condition of her left thigh bone (femur) which is medically known as chronic osteomyetitis.
This had resulted in destruction of almost 13 cm of her thigh bone length and loss of continuity of the said bone.
RIMS director Prof Ahanthem Santa Singh lauded the operation team and ensured all possible help from the administration.
