CNPO calls for peaceful election

Chandel Naga People's Organisation (CNPO) has expressed dismay over the prevailing tense situation in Chandel and Tengnoupal assembly constituencies after violent incidents on January 31, February 17 and 19 .
Observing that the democratic values of the country and ethos of tribal societies in the region are at threat, a CNPO release issued by its information cell appealed to all the stake holders to abide by the rules of the Election Commission, practical realities of the tribal governance units in village units and civil societies.
"We appeal to all the centre, state, district and village authorities to coordinate and work together for a peaceful conduct of the elections and in full compliance with the code of conduct laid down by the ECI", it said.
CNPO also condemned the arbitrary firing at Nisha-band women folks at Unapat village on February 19 and demanded unconditional release of the two agitators who are currently being detained at the Kakching Police for their involvement in the peaceful rally on February 19 at Unapat village.
It then condemned the incidents at Tuishmi where party flag was set ablaze on January 31 and stone pelting on February 17.Such incidents are unhealthy and only promote hatred and disunity to the society and state at large, it cautioned.
CNPO also appealed to the state authorities to honour and respect the village administration, maintaining that tribal societies in Chandel and other parts of the state have a well-established village governance systems and practices since the time immemorial.
