Chandel, February 21 2022:
ATSUM, KSO and ANSAM have appealed the people of 41-Chandel (ST) AC to ensure that the upcoming election is held in a peaceful manner.
The student bodies made the joint statement after conducting a spot enquiry at Unopat village, Western Valley Area, Chandel where police commandos had fired live rounds when they were allegedly stopped by Meira Paibis from entering the village at around 8.30 pm of Feb 19 .
The student bodies added that such unsolicited acts of violence have created a sense of fear amongst the people of the area and appealed all the concerned parties to ensure that such incidents are not repeated.
Speaking to the media ANSAM president Peter Monsang said the attack on Meira Paibis of the village who are keeping vigil to safeguard the villagers is highly condemnable.
If the police had official business in the village, they could have communicated with the village leaders to prevent such unwanted incidents from happening, he added.
He also demanded the immediate release of two contract workers who were arrested by the police in connection with the incident.
Meanwhile, chief of Unopat village KL Rockyngam alleged that the police had come to the village that night and incited violence without any reason and was later portrayed as poll related, which is very unfortunate.
He appealed to all concerned to not spread such false information at a press conference held at Unopat village public ground today.
He further said that election is meant for the people to choose their representative as per their choice and free will and no one should force the voters to cast their vote for a particular candidate against their will.
Anal Sinnu Ruwl vice president Ps Tonila and Unopat Sinnu Ruwl president Lani Pashel have also condemned the incident.
