Imphal, February 21 2022:
A 'Iruppi Mitngou' (Ferruginous Pochard, commonly known as White-eyed Pochard), a rare duck species, was released in the wild today.
The rare duck species was released in a part of Loktak lake today by a team of wild life activists including Dr Rebecca Soibam Chanu, Divisional Forest Officer, Bishnupur district and wild life activist Premjit Elangbam who is also the secretary of Wild Life Explorer's Manipur and founder of Green Brigade Manipur after the condition of the bird was kept under observation for a day.
The particular bird was handed over to Premjit Elangbam by Huidrom Rojer from Toubul Makha Leikai after he found the bird stuck in a fish-net.
It may be noted that this rare bird species is enlisted in the 'Near Threatened' list of the International Union for Conservation of Nature in view of its decreasing population.
The wild life activists lauded Rojer Huidrom for his noble deeds and appealed to all to contribute earnestly to safeguard the birds which are sheltering in the Loktak lake.
