Poll violence: Two assaulted, DM Jiribam imposes restrictions

With election campaigns gaining steam in Jiribam ahead of the 12th State Assembly election 2022, a group of individuals suspected to be Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) workers allegedly assaulted two supporters of a rival political party on Sunday at around 11:30 pm.
Speaking to media persons, social worker from Latingkhal Gram Panchayat, Puja Namasudra shared that people of Latingkhal GP are a peaceful lot who do not provoke or create unnecessary tension amongst different groups.
However, workers of a political group brutally assaulted two residents of the village and they are currently receiving treatment at Jiribam and Silchar Hospital, she added.

The persons injured in the alleged attack have been identified as Anu Namaswudra and Pritam Roy from Latingkhal GP.
In view of the unfortunate incident, Puja Namasudra further informed of certain restrictions placed upon Latingkhal GP, Chhotobekra GP and Borobekra GP.
"Groups of more than 5 persons will be barred from entering the aforementioned GPs after 5 pm with immediate effect", said Puja Namasudra while adding that youths of the GPs will also launch protests if fleets of vehicles enter the area and the consequences of such a volatile situation must be borne by the authorities of Election Commission and the Jiribam Administration.
Later, residents of Latingkhal GP raised slogans including, "we want peace", "we want free and fair election", "we strongly condemn brutal assault on Anu Namasudra and Pritam Roy", "we want our democratic right", etc.
Meanwhile, in a bid to keep the tense situation between the two groups in East Latingkhul Village in check, District Magistrate, Jiribam Manipur, W Malemnganba Chenglei (IAS) has imposed Section 144 of CrPC from February 21 onwards from 6 pm to 6 am across the following areas - Ningthembam Iron Bridge along IVR leading to Nungchapi, Makhabosti crossing (forest beat office) along JT Road, Chandranathpur crossing along JT Road and along Jiri river.
The order has prohibited movement of any person outside their respective residences except for Government officials/machineries involved in the enforcement of law and order, essential services, media and individuals with specific special permits issued by competent authority.
