Thoubal, November 18 2022:
A joint team of Thoubal units of National Tobacco Control Programme and Food Safety Department along with district police and CMO conducted enforcement drive against tobacco products in Thoubal bazar on Friday.
During the drive, tobacco products sold in violation of existing rules were seized from shops and the shop-owners penalised.
Speaking in this regard, National Tobacco Control Programme district nodal officer Dr Trusty informed that selling of tobacco products should be done by pasting proper signboard and warning poster.
Moreover, tobacco products are not allowed for sale to people who are under 18 years of age under Cigarette and Other Tobacco Product Act (COTPA).
Shops violating the Act will be fined, Dr Trusty continued, while adding that the drive was conducted to make the people aware about the Act in Thoubal bazar.
While informing that the drive will be conducted weekly, the officer appealed to shopkeepers not to sell tobacco products by violating the Act.
Designated food safety officer Yumnam Satyajit also cautioned that punitive actions will be initiated if shops are found violating the Act.
