Imphal, November 18 2022:
Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), Manipur has demanded University Grants Commission (UGC) chairperson M Jagadesh Kumar to withdraw the advisory forwarded to the governors of states and union territories (UTs) for conducting lectures on certain themes.
According to a statement released by CPI-M Manipur secretary Kshetrimayum Shanta, the advisory to states and UTs to conduct lecture programmes on the themes of 'Ideal King in Indian Philosophy', 'Khap Panchayat' and 'Democratic Tradition' on November 26, is against the framework of the Constitution of India and the statutory provision of UGC Act.
CPI condemns the move by UGC to conduct lecture programmes on the above themes in around 90 universities across the country, he said.
The statement continued: "The chairperson of UGC is claiming that ancient India did not have autocracy or aristocratism.
This act is basically contradicting the role played by Varnashrama and caste based social hierarchy, which was a huge challenge to ushering in the present democracy in India.
It is an attempt to allow governors appointed by RSS and BJP to propagate the agenda, while sidelining any opportunity for detailed discussion on the matter with elected representatives.
This act further shows the covert motive of the National Education Policy and could be taken as attempt to destroy scientific temper and rationality with education as the weapon'.
CPI-M Manipur then sought cooperation from democratic organisations and people of Manipur in putting a stop to such unconstitutional acts immediately.
