Bijoy Govinda Thangapat drawing tourists: RK Imo

Stating that Bijoy Govinda Thangapat has been successful in attracting tourists, Sagolband MLA RK Imo has called for public contribution in keeping the historical site neat and clean instead of just relying on the government.
The MLA inaugurated a newly constructed 'Heikru Hidongba' hall and dedicated the renovated Thangapat to the public on Friday.
Speaking on the occasion, RK Imo informed that renovation of the Thangapat was taken up from time to time but the condition of the historical site worsened in the last couple of years.
Water quality had degraded significantly making it unsafe for public use.
However, the condition has improved after the government took up renovation and restoration work of the Thangapat along with Wangkhei Pukhri and Kangla Thangapat under 'Advance in-situ bio remediation and restoration project of ponds and rivers', he said.
As a result, the water body has become a beautiful historical site, with potential to attract more and more tourists.
It has also become a recreational space for elders.
Surface water treatment works were taken up here by using two solar-powered paddle aviators and a solar-powered surface aviator for one whole year under the scheme.
Several works were also taken up under Go Green Mission to improve the surrounding of the water body, he said.
The MLA also conceded that the government alone cannot keep the water body neat and clean, and called for public participation in this regard.
He also informed about plan to deploy two or three paddle boats in the Thangapat.
The paddle boats will not only provide recreational activities to the public but also generate income for the local club.
Recalling how his assurance for installing solar lamps and plants in all the roads, streets and clubs, community halls of the AC before the election, the MLA said that works are being taken up to fulfil the promises.
Stating that he had earmarked Rs 1 crore from this year's MLA local area development fund for the purpose, RK Imo said that once completed, local residents will no longer need to contribute fund for street lighting.
He also told the gathering that water supply schemes are nearing completion and all the localities will have household tap water connection within two years.
He also informed that ATM booths will be installed at Kwakeithel Leimakhujam Leikai and Meino Leirak.
