Expressing grave concern that cases of crime against women have been on the rise in the state, Women Action for Development (WAD) has pointed out the need to establish state-of-the-art forensic science department in the state so as to speed up conclusive investigation of such cases.
WAD initiated a fact-finding visit to Kumbi police station and also met family members of Thiyam Ongbi Binda of Kumbi Terakhong Thoubal Leikai, who was allegedly killed by her husband Thiyam Devan.
During the visit, it was found that Devan is under judicial custody and the hammer used in killing Binda has also been recovered.
Police also assured that charge sheet will be filed at the earliest.
Speaking to reporters on the side-lines of the visit, WAD secretary Sobita Mangsatabam lamented that crimes against women have been increasing rapidly in the state of late including the case of a woman killed by her husband reported this year.
With some reports pointing towards excessive use of drugs responsible for increasing crimes committed against women, there is the need to conduct proper study in this regard, Sobita Mangsatabam pointed out.
