CSOs commemorate Nupi Lan anniversary

The 83rd anniversary of the Nupi Lan was observed today at Jawaharlal Nehru (JN) Manipur Dance Academy Hall.
The commemorative function was organised by the Nupi Lan Numit Observation Committee, comprising representatives of AMKIL, Kanglamei, Porei Leimarol, Chituwa, AMAWOVA, Nupi Samaj, Tammi Chingmi, MEPWAK, WWOK and NYLAK in association with the Protection and Preser-vation Committee Manipur (PPCM) .
Floral tributes were paid to all the women who took part in the Nupi Lan.
Apunba Manipur Kanba Ima Lup (AMKIL) president L Nganbi, Kangleipak Lamjing Apunba Meira Lup president Y Leirik Leima, Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur vice president Soraisham Memcha, Ching Tam United Women's Association president M Purnimashi Leima, PPCM convenor M Bisheshwor, Kabui Mother's Association Manipur president Atompi Kamei, Kuki Women Union Manipur president Avei Haokip and MMWO advisor Khadijan Begum Phundreimayum attended the observance as presidium members.
GP Women College Asst Professor Dr K Indrakumar, CCSK president Jeetendra Ningomba, Manipur University Manipuri Department Associate Professor Dr Chirom Rajketan and retired Professor N Joykumar attended the event as resource persons.
Observation committee convenor W Shama said the first Nupi Lan took place in 1904 while the second Nupi Lan took place in 1939.Both were movements against the British colonisers who were oppressing the people.
The Armed Forces Special Powers Act 1958 has been a major reason for crime against women and humanity in Manipur.
The Nupi Lan observation carried messages for removal of the 'draconian' AFSPA 1958.If the Act is not repealed from Manipur entirely, it would invite mass movement of the people, she said.
