Foundation laid for Nupi Lal statue in Tripura
Nupi Lal statue will help promote heroic nature of Manipuri women: AMUCO

All Manipur United Clubs' Organisation (AMUCO) president Pheiroijam Nando Luwang laid the foundation stone for install ing a statue of Nupi Lal at Sri Sri Radhamadhav Debtabari Complex, Nalgaria in Agartala, Tripura on Monday.
The statue would be installed as a joint effort of Manipuri Literary and Cultural Forum (MLCT), Tripura and AMUCO, at the temple complex, which was constructed by Thongam Tulsibati, who got married to Tripura King Radha Kishore Manikya.
Sri Sri Radhamadhav Debtabari secretary Konthoujam Dilip, MLCT Tripura convenor Khoisnam Birola, president Ningombam Bira and vice-president Thongratabam Gourakishwar also at tended the event.
Manipuri filmmakers OC Meira and Ajit Yumnam, and Sahitya Akademi award winning writer and film actor Ashok Kumar were also present on the occasion.
AMUCO donated Rs 3 lakh to MLCT Tripura for construction of the statue.
Speaking on the occasion, Nando Luwang recalled the historic Manipuri women's uprising of July 6, 1904 and December 12, 1939, and how Manipuri women in different parts of the country are today living with pride for the courage and heroic stand shown by the Manipuri women against the British.
Though statues of many Manipuri martyrs could be seen in different states, statue of Nupi Lal is rare, he said while expressing confidence that the statue will help in showcasing the valour of Manipuri women to a broader audience.
Tripura, which was once known as Takhel to the Manipuris, has close relationship with Manipur with 14 Manipuri women getting married to successive kings of Tripura, he said and assured that they will ensure early completion of the statue, which will motivate Manipuris in the state to learn about the Manipuri history and bravery of Manipuri women.
Later, MLCT Tripura and AMUCO jointly organised the 83rd State Level Nupi Lal Memorial Day at Bamjatiya community hall, Berimura, Tripura (West) with Tripura MLA Krishnadhan Das as chief guest.
Nupi Lal Memorial Day Observance Committee convenor Khoisnam Birola presided over the function while DDK Agartala news editor Nongmaithem Reena Chanu, MLCT Tripura president Ningombam Bira, educationist N Hemanta Datta, Marup joint editor RK Tarunjit and Takhel Leima Tengbang Lup president N Radhika attended as guests of honour.
Takhel Jagoi, a book on Takhel dance, which was performed in Kakching during early days, published by Southern Manipur Art and Culture Promotion Centre Kakching, was also released on the occasion.
A 27-member delegation of artistes of Southern Manipur Art and Culture Promotion Centre also performed Thang Leiteng, Takhel Jagoi and Maibi Jagoi on the occasion.
Artistes of Tripura Manipuri community also presented several cultural dances as part of the observance.
On the other hand, Apunba Meira Paibi Lup, Brahmaputra Valley, Assam observed the day at Nandapur Chariali Durga Mandir, Hojai, Assam on Monday.
AMKIL advisor Khangenbam Anandi and Apunba Meira Paibi Lup, Brahmaputra Valley president Lairenlakpam Boijonti attended the event as chief guest and president respectively.
UCM vice-president YK Dhiren, Nongpok Leingak Apunba Nupi Lup, Manipur president Nongthombam Radhamani, UPF Manipur adviser L Jadumani, Hojai MLA Ramakrishna Ghose, DC Hojai Simanta Kumar Das, Hojai Zila Parishad president H Romabala Devi, Dhal Pukhuri Block, Hojai president M Sumila, Ichemma editor Dr Phuritsabam Biramani, Manipuri Development Council, Assam members Th Irabat and L Akham were also present as guests of honour.
Meanwhile, All Assam Manipuri Meira Paibi Lup and All Manipuri Muslim Meira Paibi Sangathan joint -ly observed the 83rd Nupi Lal at Pailapol community hall, Cachar (Assam) on Monday.
The observance function was attended by Lup president Th Sanathoi, Sangathan president Sangita Begum, former Lup president Bini Misra, RK Gopalsana, UCM general secretary N Dev, UCM leaders Khomdram Ratan and Y Second as members on the dais.
