Anti-AFSPA call, floral tributes mark Nupi Lan event

Under the aegis of Protection and Preservation Committee Manipur (PPCM), Nupi Lan Numit Observation Committee formed by 11 different women organisations observed the 83rd Nupi Lan at JN Manipur Dance Academy auditorium, here, on Monday along with paying rich floral tributes to those who took active role in the historic movement.
According to Committee convener W Shama Devi, both the Nupi Lan of 1904 and 1939 were against British colonialism and torture of innocent civilians by the colonial forces.
The committee took the second event as common and had been observing it as Nupi Lan every year for the past many years.
She said that the historic Nupi Lan instilled courage and patriotism among the present generation and would do so in future too.
According to W Shama Devi, the 83rd Nupi Lan commemoration function gives a clear message to people of Manipur to mount pressure on the government for removing AFSPA-1958 so that peace prevails in the state.
If the government declines people's demand, a collective and intense movement is required to uproot the draconian legislation from the state, she added.
The commemorative function was also attended by Kangleipak Lamjing Apunba Meira Lup (KANGLAMEI) president Y Leirik Leima, Porei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur vice president Soraisham Memcha, Ching Tam United Women Association president M Purnimashi Leima, PPCM convener M Bisheshwor, Kabui Mother's Association president Atompi Kamei, Kuki Women Union president Avei Haokip and MMWO Women's Wing advisor Khadijan Begum Phundreimayum as presidium members.
Assistant professor Dr K Indrakumar of GP Women college, CCSK president Jeetendra Ningomba, MU Manipuri Department associate professor Dr Chirom Rajketan and MU History Department retired professor N Joykumar spoke as resource persons during the commemorative function.
Meanwhile, Leima Chanu Nawa Tengbang Lup under the aegis of its president Dr S Bhagyabati imparted defence technique to local girls and students of Chinga Makha High School in connection with Nupi Lan Ningshing Numit at Irom Sagei Ema Yumjao Lairembi Shanglen, Singjamei Chinga Makha Phura Makhong.
In Thoubal district, Nin gol Club, Heirok observed Nupi Lan Memorial Day at Heirok Part II Mayai Leikai community hall on Monday with Ningol Club president Khudongbam Sophiya, CADA president Hijam Priyokumar, Apunba Manipur Kanba Ima Lup (AMKIL) secretary general Ng Prabhabati, Manipuri Chanura Leisem Marup Macha leima) president W Amusana, Extra Judicial Execution Victim Families Manipur (EEVFAM) president Renu Takhellambam and woman activist Chongtham Memton as presidium members.
All Manipur Democratic Women's Association (AMDWA) also observed the 83rd Nupi Lan and carried out a memorial run at Khumbong.
The observance was attended by Imphal West ZP Up-Adhyaksha Bobby Laishram as chief guest, AMDWA president Chanambam Sundari as president, Imphal West ZP member Thingujam Nilamani Singh as special guest while Oriental College associate professor G Ranjita Devi and Ngairangbam GP member Konthoujam Jina were present as guests of honour.
Prizes were also distributed to winners and all those who participated in the memorial run as a part of the function.
Writers' Association Kakching observed Nupi Lal Memorial Day at Representatives of Lois (RoL) auditorium located at Kakching Chumnang Leikai.
The observance was attended by Writers' Association president Pukhrambam Nimai, DIET-Kakching retired principal Naorem Birmangal and retired teacher Naorem Tababi as presidium members.
Around 20 poets recited their poems and floral tributes paid to the brave mothers.
On the other hand, Alliance for Development Alternative Manipur (ADAM) planted tree saplings at Angaan Ching Eco Park, Kakching to commemorate Nupi Lan.
