State pays rich tributes to Nupi Lan 'warriors'

Remembering the brave mothers of Manipur who fought against the mighty British, the State observed the Nupi Lan Day at different places today.
The State Government too observed the day at Nupi Lan Memorial Complex and TG Higher Secondary School in the attendance of Power Minister Th Biswajit and MAHUD Minister Y Khemchand.
Led by the two Cabinet Ministers, the gathering paid floral tributes to the portraits of the brave mothers.
At TG Higher Secondary School, artistes of Shri Shri Bal Mukunda Dev Government Music College sang a patriotic song in honour of the 'brave mothers' while Nupi Lan Memorial Association Drama Party performed a Nupi Lan play.
Speaking as chief guest, Th Biswajit said that the Government of Manipur has been organising Nupi Lan Day to commemorate the two historic movements waged by the women of Manipur.

Saying that the people of Manipur, specially the younger generation, must understand why the mothers registered a strong movement against the British and take a lesson from it, Biswajit narrated the series of events which compelled the women of Manipur to protest against the 'atrocities of the British' and the artificial famine of 1939 .
Futher stating that the women of Manipur are known for their bravery and expertise in many fields and "there is no market like Ima Keithel in any part of the world", Biswajit continued, "We all remember how our mothers and sisters with torches in their hands fought against AFSPA and the excesses of security forces.
Construction of women's markets in seven districts had been completed while construction of another 10 markets at different places are underway, the Biswajit informed. Stating that Rani Gaidinliu Tribal Freedom Fighters Museum is being constructed in honour of the late freedom fighter, the Minister opined that such initiative of the Government is a fitting example of its respect for womenfolk.
Continuing that the present Government is taking keen interest in uplifting the economic condition of womenfolk, he said that 1815 looms had been distributed under Handloom and Textiles Department so far.
Y Khemchand was the president of the memorial event.
The MAHUD Minister said that the history of Manipur will be incomplete without mentioning the bravery of "our mothers and sisters" .
Saying that Nupi Lan is a rare event as such movements were not seen in any part of the world, Khemchand maintained that the Nupi Lan has inspired many to stand against every kind of abuse and atrocities.
He also said that it is the women of Manipur who have been preserving the culture and tradition of Manipur since the past.
