Kakching, February 21 2022:
Unopat village chief, Unopat Sinnu Ruwl, Anal Sinnu Ruwl and different students' bodies have strongly condemned alleged indiscriminate firing by a commando team and using tear gas shells to stop a protest rally organised against their violent act.
Addressing a press meet held at Beru Unopat village ground on Monday, Unopat Sinnu Ruwl president Lani Pashel said that elderly women of the village kept night vigil at the village gate to prevent youth from indulging in brawls under the influence of liquor in the run of state assembly election.
On Saturday night around 8.30, a team of Sugnu CDO tried to enter the village.
However, the elderly women stopped them and asked to take permission from the village chief.
However, they tried to force their way by firing several rounds of shots.
Lani Pashel also termed the claim of armed cadres imposing their mandates on the villagers made by Western Valley Area Sinnu Ruwl president Rd Nihring and Unopat Village Authority secretary KL Solomon as baseless.
Lani Pashel asked why Rd Nihring did not come out at the time of the incident.
Beru Unopat village chief KL Rockyngam said that all the security forces are required to take prior approval of the village chief to enter the village during night time and the village chief should accompany the security team when visiting any resident.
He further informed that the CDO team also picked up two civilians on the way, and demanded the authority to release the two without any conditions.
Anal Sinnu Ruwl (Anal Women Society) vice-president Ps Tonila said that association members from Chandel and Chakpikarong rushed to the village on getting information about the incident and they carried out a protest rally.
The protesters were very small in number and the police force could easily control the situation but they fired tear gas shells causing injuries to several people including herself.
She then demanded the government authority to take up necessary actions to prevent such incidents in future.
On the other hand, a joint team of All Tribal Students' Union Manipur (ATSUM), All Naga Students' Association Manipur (ANSAM), Kuki Students' Organisation (KSO) General Headquarters and Anal Lenruwl Tangpi (ALT) visited the village and took stock of the prevailing situation.
The student bodies strongly condemned the violent act carried out by police CDO team and demanded unconditional release of the two civilians.
They also said that one of the two arrested people is a civilian engaged in a contract work in Western valley area and the other is a government employee, who has no connection with the mob incident.
