UPF to install memorial pillar in Cachar

United People's Front (UPF) Manipur president Nongthombam Rupachandra has informed that the Front will install memorial pillar for Manipur Levy at Chandrapur in Cachar district of Assam.
Informing this in a press meet held at Manipur Press Club here on Friday, Rupachandra said that the foundation stone for the memorial pillar will be laid on May 23 .
Manipur Levy is instrumental in regaining control of Manipur from the Burmese invaders after the seven years devastation.
After the Burmese occupation, king Gambhir Singh sought help from British to reclaim Manipur.
With the help of the British, Gambhir Singh formed Raja Gambhir Singh Levy with prince Nara Singh as the chief of army on April 20, 1824 at Yatrapur in Cachar.
The British regime provided 50 cavalries, 500 guns and 55 NCOs on their expense.
In the expedition, the levy was renamed into Maharani Victoria Levy when it reached Syl het on May 17, 1825.The Levy reached Chandrapur on May 23, 1825, where the soldiers were trained on using arms and other warfare.
With the support and training from the British, the levy played crucial role in reclaiming Manipur from the Burmese invaders, he recounted.
Commemorating the day on which the Levy reached Chandrapur, UPF will lay foundation stone for the memorial pillar on May 23 this year, he informed.
Rupachandra further informed that UPF will observe National Re-consolidation Year from May 23 to January 9 next year.
