Imphal, April 21 2023:
The Manipuri Chanura Leishem Marup (Macha Leima) celebrated its 54th foundation day at Lamyanba Shanglen at Palace Compound, today.
The observance was graced by Manipur State Commission for Woman Chairperson Salam Ulka and Macha Leima president Wangkheimayum Amusana as chief guest and president respectively.
At the function, advisor to Macha Leima Khangembam Anandi said that the organisation has been spreading awareness on women empowerment, apart from taking part in addressing issues since its inception on April 21, 1969 .
She added that the role taken by Macha Leima in protecting the rights of women and in removing the controversial AFSPA from some parts of Manipur were significant.

Macha Leima also runs a micro-finance and has been providing a source of livelihood to a number of women, Anandi continued.
Stating that the one of the big issues which the State is currently facing is the settlement of illegal immigrants in hill districts and the subsequent changes in the demography, Anandi claimed that the number of non residents is greater than the indigenous folks at many villages and the same is disturbing.
Anandi went on to state that the indigenous people will either become a minority or even disappear if the current trend of illegal settlement continues.
Continuing that the frequent seizure of drugs in Manipur and the utilisation of the State as a transit route to transport banned items is another matter of concern, Anandi claimed that even drug manufacturing laboratories have been set up in Manipur.
It seems like the drug lords are given free hands, apart from allowing deforestation for poppy plantations, she added.
Saying all these drug trade and poppy cultivation may be a hidden agenda of some forces to wipe out 'our society,' Anandi asked whether the Government is intentionally protecting the kingpins.
Further stating that a collective effort is needed to safeguard Manipur from all threats, she asserted that Macha Leima will continue its endeavours in the larger interest of Manipur.
Salam Ulka also acknowledged the contribution of Macha Leima to the society.
