Imphal, November 01 2022:
Communist Party of India (CPI), Manipur State Council welcomed the call for practicing double cropping by the government.
While assuring of all-out support, the party also urged the government for effective implementation of the initiative.
In a statement, CPI said that the most important factor to facilitate double or triple cropping is existence or development of proper irrigation network and effective planning.
In today's world, different techniques of farming such as vertical farming are becoming popular.
Israel has provided effective farming solutions even in their desert areas.
The global landscape of farming and agriculture has undergone significant changes and all these are result of adopting scientific methods and improvement in agricultural infrastructure.
The common people and poor farmers cannot bring such changes in the sector without the intervention and investment from the government, the statement said.
This year, the state is facing crop failure due to erratic rainfall.
Only 10 per cent of the farmlands are primed for good harvest.
In such a situation, it would be wrong to hold only the monsoon responsible as it is a direct impact of failed agricultural infrastructure.
Several irrigation dams and irrigation canals are lying defunct in the absence of proper maintenance from the side of government.
Considering the crop failure, the government needs to bring up effective solution to address similar issues in future including the upcoming Rabi season, the statement said.
It also demanded the government to provide compensation of Rs 30,000 per Sangam to the affected farmers.
