MLA Karam Shyam lauds roles of critics in society

Lauding the role of critics in the society, Manipur Tourism chairman and Langthabal MLA Karam Shyam has said that today's generation needs to critically deliberate on the contributions made by renowned personalities for the society and try to emulate them.
Speaking as chief guest of the 17th foundation day of Critics Forum Manipur held at Manipur Dramatic Union (MDU), Yaiskul Police Lane, here, on Tuesday, MLA Shyam noted that there are only few people in the state who are proactively involved in the field of theatre and literature.
The work done by them reflects Manipuri society and they played a major role in the development and preservation of culture and traditions in the present world.
Their works show the goods and ills of the society and provide a chance for course correction to the society.
But unfortunately there is clear evidence of abstention from outright criticism on political matters as many are apprehensive about the consequences, he opined.
Karam Shyam continued that one must be ready to face any criticism, gracefully accept his faults and work towards improving his weaknesses.
He also encouraged all concerned to thoroughly analyse and discuss political and social issues for the betterment of the future generations.
Recalling the criticism on his action during his time as the revenue minister in one of the state's dailies, Karam Shyam stated that he positively accepted the criticism and even rewarded author of the satirical article with Rs 10,000.The MLA also stressed that people have every right to express their opinions in this country and called upon Manipuri intellectuals, critics and artistes to guide the politicians of the state towards proper conduct and behaviour for betterment of the state.
In his address, Critics Forum Manipur president Dr Lamabam Gojendra pointed out the importance of critics and explained how the Forum was formed at MDU to hold critical discussions on various issues plaguing the state.
As part of the event, a talk on the topic 'My Theatre Journey' was moderated by Narendra Ningombam during which Aribam Syam Sharma recalled his journey as a theatre artiste.
Later, a play 'Ningthibi Keinya' was presented by Lairembi Dramatic & Cultural Union.
