Training prog on egg, meat held

The annual production of egg and meat in the State is far below the requirement, said Lungmuana Lakher, Principal Secretary (Vety and AH), Manipur.
He was speaking at the inaugural session of a one-day training programme on backyard poultry rearing under Mera Gaon Mera Gourav at Central Agricultural University (CAU), Iroishemba today.
L Lakher said the State is able to produce 32,000 MT of meat in a year against the annual requirement of 35,000 MT.
Against the annual requirement of 50 crore eggs, about 10 crore eggs are produced in the State annually.
He said that backyard poultry farming will not only help improve the economy of the State but also contribute greatly in meeting the annual requirement of meat and egg.
Lungmuana said using new technology by farmers and creating awareness on backyard poultry rearing will pay dividends.
Dean of College of Agriculture, CAU, JM Laishram said scientists and experts of the university are identifying some villages like Sanjenbam, Heikrujam, Kamong, Top Duseera and Kha Leikinthabi for providing advice to farmers under 'Mera Gaon Mera Gaurav' .
Due to shortage of staff, villages locating within 50 kms radius of the university could not be covered, he said.
Giving advice to farmers and developing personal social responsibility amongst scientists towards farming community will be covered under the Mera Gaon Mera Gaurav.
Farmers from different districts of the State took part in the programme.
20 chicks and winter crop seeds each were distributed to five selected farmers.
The programme was organised by Dept of Sciences, College of Agriculture, CAU.
The chief guest also released a book on 'piggery rearing' at the occasion.
