Imphal, August 30 2026:
BJP MLA Lourembam Rameshwor has warned that anyone from the indigenous community may never be able to become the Chief Minister of Manipur if the National Register of Citizens (NRC) is not updated before census.
The MLA was speaking at a meritorious award distribution function held at Arapti Bokul Makhong ground today.
He said that the Meitei community which was the once largest community of Manipur may never again become the Chief Minister of Manipur if census operations are carried out before illegal immigrants are identified.
He also highlighted the grim situation of the Meitei community.
Whereas Meiteis are not allowed to settle in hill areas, Meiteis have been sharing the tiny valley area with all communities, he said.
Even though the indigenous Tripuris have been reduced to a small minority in Tripura, they are allowed to settle in any part of the State, Rameshwor said.
He called upon all the indigenous people to join hands and work collectively in order to prevent Manipur from falling in the hands of illegal immigrants.
