Adhocism continues to plague RIMS

Imphal, November 07 2015 :
Like in the preceding years where there was no regular Medical Superintendent at RIMS, the medical institution is now facing a similar situation where there is no regular Director for a prolonged period.
Although Director and Medical Superintendent are the two key posts for administration of a medical institu- tion, there was no regular Medical Superintendent for a prolonged period.
And if there was regular Medical Superintendent (MS), there was no regular Director.
There was a controversy at RIMS when the official order for appointment of a regular MS was kept at bay for a prolonged period.
Now it has been more than three months since a notification for submission of appli- cations for appointment of a regular Director was issued.
But no regular Director has been appointed till date.
If the appointment of a regular Director is being deliberately delayed at the behest of some influential people who are craving after the same top post, it would be a big loss for the medical institution.
Some senior doctors of RIMS told The Sangai Express that administration of the medical institution can be done far more effectively under a regular Director than under an in-charge Director.
Even though certain chang-es have been seen outwardly in RIMS during the past six years, a close examination would reveal that very little has changed.
All the existing buildings of RIMS are semi-pucca buildings and they are more than 45 years old.
They must be dismantled and new multi-storey buildings should be constructed in their place.
The existing operation theatres are outdated and they can no longer cater to the changing needs of time, said the senior doctors.
But there is no plan to build modern operation theatres which can provide best health care services.
There was a dental college but it has become non-functional since sometime back.
There was shortage of faculty members.
Now, it is not clear whether students of the dental college which has been discontinued by the Dental Council of India (DCI) would be given recognition or not.
There is a need to streamline doctors and paramedical staff and provide necessary medicines to patients in order to enhance health care services at the medical institution, continued the senior doctors.
Given this growing necessity for administrative reforms, there must be a regular Director.
Meanwhile, it is reported that many faculty members of RIMS have sent complaints against RIMS authority to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
It is said that subordinate faculty members of RIMS were able to lodge complaints against RIMS authority largely on account of absence of a regular Director.
Taking strong exception to the complaints lodged with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Director in-charge Prof S Rita issued an office memorandum on October 24 asking all faculty members to come up with constructive suggestions rather than engaging themselves in anti-establishment activities, added the senior doctors.
