Imphal, August 30 2026: The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) has urged the people of Manipur to be prepared to intensify the movement demanding the updation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) if the Government fails to postpone the population census in the State.

COCOMI, in a statement, said that Manipur has been witnessing a steady influx of illegal immigrants for decades, however, successive Governments have failed to address the issue.

It further stated that the population of illegal immigrants has increased significantly in the State with its implications now evident to all.

Although different narratives surround the ongoing crisis in Manipur, the involvement of external forces in the crisis is widely accepted, COCOMI added.

Claiming that the indigenous people of Manipur are unable to move freely within the State while tens of thousands of people remain in relief camps due to the alleged aggression by illegal immigrants and their associates, COCOMI maintained that the Centre and the State Government's plan to conduct the Census amid such a situation reflects a failure to take the crisis seriously.

COCOMI stated that the identification and deportation of illegal immigrants are indispensable to bringing about lasting peace in the State.

Saying the ongoing movement to identify illegal immigrants must succeed to safeguard the future of Manipur, the Committee appealed to the people to teach a befitting lesson to elected representatives who fail to stand with the people on the issue.
