Imphal, August 30 2026: Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh left Imphal for New Delhi again today amid growing demands for the updation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the State.

A well-placed source said that the Chief Minister, along with Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and Commissioner (Home) N Ashok Kumar, who are also in Delhi, are expected to meet Amit Shah and other Central leaders to discuss issues related to the census in the State.

This is his second visit to the National Capital in less than a week, following his meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah on August 26 .

The visit also comes just a few days from the Assembly session, which is scheduled to start from September 2 .

Before leaving for the National capital, Khemchand told the press that the demand for implementation of the NRC in the State has received a positive response from New Delhi.

Specifically, a press release issued by the Chief Minister's Secretariat appreciated the "role played by the leaders of the 14 CSOs, Kangleipak, and the delegation of MLAs who recently campaigned in New Delhi for the implementation of the NRC in the State by meeting Central leaders and officials" .

"Their campaign has yielded a positive response from New Delhi," Khemchand said.

The Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) has also for long been demanding the updation of the NRC before the census as well.

The Chief Minister also said that he was travelling to New Delhi to meet top Central leaders and discuss various ongoing issues concerning the State.

The Chief Minister, meanwhile, appealed to all sections of society in Mani-pur to refrain from calling bandhs or blockades to voice their grievances, stating that such actions could sometimes lead to unwanted incidents of violence.

He instead urged them to adopt "other forms of democratic agitation" .

Saying the State and Union Governments are committed to fulfilling the aspirations of the people of Manipur, he added that calling a bandh would serve no purpose other than creating further hardships for the people.

Khemchand said daily-wage earners and students are among the worst affected during bandhs.

Women vegetable vendors also suffer considerably as they depend on the daily sale of farm produce for their livelihood, and any disruption affects their families severely, he added.

He also said students suffer when their normal academic activities are disrupted by bandhs.

Maintaining that students are the pillars of society, he appealed to all stakeholders not to disrupt the academic calendar in the State.

The Chief Minister warned that stringent action would be taken against agitators who violate the law in an attempt to create a chaotic situation.

He also said that road transport services between Imphal, Dimapur and Guwahati have resumed after more than three years "without any trouble" .

The resumption of the Imphal-Dimapur-Guwahati bus service would ease the burden on people who had been compelled to pay costly airfares for travel between Imphal and Guwahati, he added.
