Local bodies back JFD, impose ban on Census activities

Imphal, August 30 2026: Several local organisations have extended support to the Campaign for Just & Fair Delimitation (JFD) and declared a boycott of Census-related activities, demanding implementation of National Register of Citizens (NRC) with 1951 as base year before Census.

The Amudon Akham Leikai Apunba Lup (AALAL), Sagolband Tera Amudon Leikai said all families in the locality will boycott the house-to-house enumeration scheduled from September 1, 2026.It warned that those who cooperate will be responsible for consequences.

It added that if the Government fails to announce its decision on JFD's demand by August 31, AALAL will join the 24-hour general strike from midnight of August 31 .

Mana-Ingkhol Youth Development Association (MIYDA), MDO and Mana-Ingkhol Apunba Meira Paibi in a joint meeting at Mana-Ingkhol Community Hall today unanimously resolved that NRC must be implemented with 1951 as base year to protect indigenous people, check demographic imbalance and abnormal population growth and deport illegal immigrants in a time-bound manner.

They declared "No NRC, No Census" as their firm stand, said no Census work will be allowed in Mana-Ingkhol area, and warned that the Government will be responsible for any untoward incident if officials defy the warning.

Meanwhile, Social Workers Club (SWC), Heirangoithong on its 65th Foundation Day held at SWC Community Hall, Heirangoithong Keithel today announced a ban on all Census-related activities within its jurisdiction.

SWC secretary Ngangom Binodkumar said Government employees residing in the area should not attend Census training and those who defy the ban will be responsible for consequences.

He said demand for NRC with 1951 base year is for present and future generations and Census without NRC will endanger indigenous people.

The club also paid floral tributes to its departed leaders and released a commemorative song.
