Imphal, April 04 2024:
In response to the statement of chief minister N Biren who, during an event held at BJP Manipur Pradesh office, said that the government has initiated process to update the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state, Congress has asked the BJP to disclose basic details of the process.
Addressing a press meet at Congress Bhawan here on Thursday, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) working president Kh Devabrata said that they are surprised by the statement on NRC made by the chief minister as there has been no formal notification issued related with process for implementation of NRC update in the state, on the official website of the Ministry of Home Affairs or the state home department, thereby testifying that the statement made by the chief minister is a political gimmick.
Regarding Congress party's stand, Devabrata said that NRC incorporated in Section 14-A of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2003, had the party's support when the NDA government introduced the same in the Parliament.
It shows that Congress party supports NRC since long but not against it.
CM Biren said that only BJP can implement NRC update which is totally wrong, he added.
Regarding the remark of AICC's former general secretary Bhakta Charan Das holding the Meeteis as well as Arambai Tenggol and Meitei Leepun responsible for the crisis in the state, MPCC spokesperson Kh Ratankumar said that the party's state unit strongly condemned the remark.
At the same time, it was a statement made by Bhakta Charan Das on his own capacity and does not reflect stand of the party.
AICC deleted the video from its social media archives after MPCC raised objection against the remark, he explained while wryly stating that BJP MLA RK Imo is commendable forbringing out the old video.
Congress members in the state love the state and they do not want counter arguments over the crisis in the state repeatedly.
The party will never compromise with the integrity and public interest, and the party will stand by this decision always, Devabrata affirmed.
