A 28-year-old man believed to be a prime suspect in several sexual assault cases was found dead with bullet injury on his head early morning today.
The deceased, identified as Irom Chingkheinganba Meitei, son of Brojen of Sugnu Tangjeng Maning Leikai, was staying at Thangmeiband relief camp.
His body was found lying on the side of Imphal-Moreh road at Waithou Sangomsang by the locals in the morning.
After the locals informed the police, a team of Lilong police station and State forensic experts rushed to the site and carried out an inquest of the dead body and the surrounding area.
The body has been deposited at JNIMS morgue for post mortem.
Lilong police have registered a case for investigation.
Sources said Chingkheinganba was arrested on multiple occasions as suspects in sexual assault cases, and he was out on bail.
He was arrested in June 2021 on the charge of luring a girl through Facebook for a ride and molesting her besides robbing the victim of her mobile phone and gold jewellery.
In another case, he was accused of sexually assaulting a minor.
He was arrested in July 2022 .
While he was in Bishnupur police, he escaped on the pretext of going to the toilet.
Later, Chingkeinganba was arrested by a team of Bishnupur commandos from the river bank opposite to Athokpam Junior High School on August 11, 2022 and remanded to judicial custody.
One more case was reportedly registered for sexual assault against Chingkeinganba.
