Imphal, April 04 2024:
Reacting to Chief Minister N Biren's assertion that due process to update NRC with respect to Manipur has been set rolling, the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has stated that no official documents could be found in this regard on the websites of the State Government and the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Speaking to media persons at Congress Bhavan this afternoon, MPCC working president Kh Devabrata maintained that had the NRC been implemented, it should have been tabled in the recent State Assembly session.
Since the NRC has been passed as an Act, the Congress party has not made any comment.
Congress party supports implementation of the same Act.
Nonetheless, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi made a suggestion to make it more secular when rules were framed for the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), Devabrata said.
Chief Minister N Biren's announcement that due process to update NRC has been set rolling when the 18th Lok Sabha elections are only a couple of weeks away gave an impression that only BJP and Biren have the authority to implement NRC and only they are concerned with the interest of the indigenous people but this was ridiculous, he remarked.
He maintained that NRC could not be implemented effectively until and unless foreigners are properly identified and deported.
If the foreigners should be identified, a foreigners tribunal should be set up, he said.
